"The Message Preached" - (1 Corinthians 1:21)

"GOD IS NOT ___"

  1. "God is not a man"
    1. Numbers 23:19
      1. The fact that "God is not a man" does not negate the fact that some similarities exist between the two. After all, man has been created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-27).
      2. What this passage teaches us is that God is supremely dependable, whereas the word of man can be so very unreliable.
    2. God's dependable nature.
      1. Luke 21:33
The word of the Lord is always true.
      2. Hebrews 6:17-18
God does not lie. He is immutable, that is: unchanging.
      3. James 1:17
        God's goodness is constant.
    3. Man's unreliable nature.
      1. Ecclesiastes 5:4-5
Unfortunately, man must be reminded to perform his obligations.
      2. Matthew 21:28-31
God takes pleasure in the rebel who repents, whereas the man who commits to God's work but fails to follow through is a disappointment.
  2. "God is not the God of the dead"
    1. Matthew 22:23-32
      1. Christ answered the Sadducees' denial of immortality by proving that "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living".
      2. Some ancient religious systems included a "god of the dead":
        1. The Egyptians had Anubis.
        2. The Greeks had Hades, who became Pluto when the Romans adopted the Greek religion.
      3. The one true God does not represent the dead, but the living.
    2. John 11:25-26; 8:51
Those who believe in Christ and keep His word can live forevermore.
    3. Titus 1:1-2
As we have already established, God cannot lie. It is He who has promised eternal life, even before time began.
  3. "God is not the author of confusion"
    1. 1 Corinthians 14:33
Disorder in church assemblies does not come from God.
    2. 1 Corinthians 14:26-40
Multiple people speaking at once is not from God, whether it's people claiming to speak in tongues or just a matter of audience response, that's contrary to the order called for in church assemblies. It is also indecent for women to speak out.
  4. "God is not mocked"
    1. Galatians 6:7-8
Some would make a mockery of God, thinking they can escape the consequences of their sins, but God will have the last laugh.
    2. Proverbs 28:13; Ecclesiastes 12:14
Sin cannot be successfully hidden from God. To attempt such is to mock God.
    3. Hebrews 10:26-31; 2 Peter 2:20-22
There is no comfort to be had in the theory of "once saved, always saved". Apostates from the faith will be punished with greater severity than those who never obeyed the gospel at all.
    4. Romans 2:5-10
God's judgment is merciful toward the obedient, but severe toward the disobedient.
    5. Luke 16:25
There is either a reward or a penalty awaiting all.
  5. "God is not unjust"
    1. Hebrews 6:10
God remembers our good deeds and rewards us for them.
    2. 2 Peter 3:7-9
The only reason we haven't yet received the promise is because God is so longsuffering that He wants more sinners to have time to repent.
    3. 2 Thessalonians 1:6-7
God is righteous to repay sinners with tribulation and to give rest to the faithful.
    4. 2 Timothy 4:7-8
God is righteous to crown those who love Him when they have fought the fight, finished the race, and kept the faith.
    5. 1 John 1:9
His faithfulness and justice allows Him to cleanse us when we go astray if we will return to Him.
  6. "God is not ashamed"
    1. Hebrews 11:13-16
God is not ashamed to be the God of faithful men and women.
    2. Job 1:8; 2:3
God was not ashamed to be called the God of Job. He was proud of Job for his dedication, especially through temptations.
    3. Acts 13:22
God was not ashamed to be called the God of David. He described David as having a heart like His own.
    4. Hebrews 11:5
God was not ashamed to be called the God of Enoch. God testified that Enoch pleased Him.
    5. Mathew 25:21, 30
Will God be ashamed to be called your God? On the great Day of Judgment, will Christ say of you, "Well done, good and faithful servant" or will He say, "Cast the unprofitable servant into outer darkness"?
