"The Message Preached" - (1 Corinthians 1:21)

"THE ASSEMBLING OF OURSELVES TOGETHER"

  • Introduction
    1. Hebrews 10:24-25
    2. Our purpose in this study is to answer these questions concerning the assembling of the saints:
      1. Who?
      2. When?
      3. Where?
      4. Why?
      5. How?
  1. Who Should Assemble?
    1. Members
The primary reason that the church meets is for the mutual exhortation of its members.
      1. Hebrews 10:24-25
      2. Acts 2:40-42, 46-47
    2. Children
Although the religious instruction of children is a work of the home, specifically, parents who do not bring their children to the assemblies are not raising them properly.
      1. Proverbs 22:6
      2. Ephesians 6:4
      3. 2 Timothy 3:14-15
    3. Visitors
Since the primary work of the church is to teach the gospel, especially to the lost, those lost who are curious about the church should be welcomed in to learn!
      1. 1 Corinthians 14:16, 22-25
      2. James 2:1-4
  2. When Should We Assemble?
    1. "On The First Day Of The Week"
      1. Acts 20:7; John 20:1, 19, 26
      2. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
    2. "Daily"
      1. Hebrews 3:12-13
      2. Acts 2:46
      3. Acts 19:9-10
  3. Where Should The Church Assemble?
    1. No Special Location Is Necessary
      1. John 4:20-24
There is no hallowed ground upon which the church is required to gather.
    2. Various Places Were Used By The Early Churches
      1. Acts 2:46-47; 5:12-13
        1. Early on, when it still enjoyed the favor of the Jewish people, the church assembled at the Temple.
        2. Since Christ fulfilled the Law of Moses (Matthew 5:17; Romans 10:4), it would stand to reason that the house of God in that Law could become a meeting place of those who would obey the gospel.
        3. Denominational houses of worship and Masonic Lodges are religions that have strayed from the original gospel. It does not stand to reason that a church of Christ would express approval of denominational error by using the facilities of an apostate group.
      2. Romans 16:3-5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15; Philemon 1-2
Many churches met in the homes of members. Some still do today.
      3. Acts 19:9-10
For an extended period, the church at Ephesus met in a school. Some churches still do this.
      4. Acts 20:7-9
The church at Troas met in an upper room. We dont know if this was just the third story of some members house, or if it was a rented space that the disciples had reserved for worship.
  4. Why Should The Church Assemble?
    1. To Eat The Lord's Supper
      1. Acts 20:7
      2. 1 Corinthians 11:17, 18, 20, 33
      3. Acts 2:42
    2. To Take Up A Collection
      1. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2
    3. To Read, Exhort, And Teach
      1. 1 Timothy 3:15; 4:13
      2. Colossians 4:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:27; Acts 15:30-31
      3. Hebrews 3:13; 10:25
      4. Acts 11:26; 2:42
    4. To Sing
      1. Hebrews 2:12
      2. Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16
    5. To Pray
      1. Acts 2:42
      2. Acts 12:5
    6. To Report The Progress Of Gospel Preaching
      1. Acts 14:27
      2. Acts 15:4, 12
    7. To Discipline Wayward Brethren
      1. Matthew 18:15-17
      2. 1 Corinthians 5:1-5
  5. How Should The Church Assemble?
    1. "Decently And In Order"
      1. 1 Corinthians 14:40, 33
        1. So that the church may be edified, rather than confused (1-5, 12-19, 22-25).
        2. With speakers addressing the church consecutively, not concurrently (26-31).
        3. With women keeping silence (34-35).
